NHL Commentators Competiton: Week 1

EDIT 10/3:
Unfortunately I’ve had to close this for week 1 36 hours earlier than I intended because CBC’s commentators are pretty widely available. If you wanted to play and didn’t get your picks in, let me know and we will work something out. Week 2 (which will run from October 15 through 22) will go up tomorrow morning, with the picks due next Sunday October 9 at 11:00pm PT. After that, the competition will run on a Monday through Sunday schedule, with the picks always due on Sunday at 11:00pm PT. Thanks for understanding.

Okay, here we go with the first week of the Canadian Sports Media NHL Commentators Competition. For more information, please see this post that explains everything. If you still have a question, leave a comment. You may also want to bookmark this page, which will have every post for the competition on it.

NHL Commentator Predictions Trial

UPDATED to include Standings:

And so, the final standings for the meaningless practice round:

KGNKH1 – 18.5
Canadiansportsmedia – 16.5
Lion – 14.5
nationscapital – 13.5
jleimer – 12
michaeltorres03 – 12
Solanges – 11.5
Ryan – 11
Steve-O – 10
Trent – 9.5

So KGNKH1 is the winner (even though the points don’t matter). He’s set a tough precedent, perfect in the preseason.

Here is the new contest that the Canadian Sports Media Blog will be running this year. It’s pretty simple, I post a list of NHL games on CBC and TSN (and occasionally Versus) each week; you guess who the commentators will be. I’ll be playing to. Usually, in order to avoid confirmations being made before the deadline, each week will run from Monday-Sunday and the deadline will be the Friday night before. So the first week will fun from October 6-16, the second week will run from October 17-23 and so on. The first two deadlines will be Monday October 3 at 11:00pm Pacific and Friday October 14 at 11:00pm Pacific.

3 points will be awarded for a correct pairing (or threesome), with 1 point awarded for any correct commentator in an incorrect threesome (or pairing). For example if I guessed Bob Cole & Garry Galley, and the actual crew was Bob Cole, Garry Galley & Glenn Healy, I’d get 2 points. The same would be true of the reverse situation. Rinkside reporters will be worth a bonus 1/2 point.

For the time being, this is a trial just to show how everything will work. There is no deadline this week, and the points don’t matter.

Monday 9/26, 4:00pm – Ottawa Senators vs. Winnipeg Jets – CBC
Tuesday 9/27, 9:00pm – New York Islanders @ Calgary Flames – TSN
Wednesday 9/28, 8:30pm – Carolina Hurricanes @ Winnipeg Jets – TSN
Thursday 9/29, 7:30pm – Tampa Bay Lightning @ Montreal Canadiens – TSN
Saturday 10/1, 7:00pm – Detroit Red Wings @ Toronto Maple Leafs – CBC
Saturday 10/1, 10:00pm – Edmonton Oilers @ Vancouver Canucks – CBC

There is only 1 rule, don’t ask any commentator etc. on Twitter what games they will be doing. That ruins the fun for all of us. If a commentator happens to post this information on Twitter before the deadline, then by all means use it.

There will be a (yet-to-be-determined) prize at the end of the season. I hope everyone has fun.
