Your NFL on Canadian TV Week 7 Guide

Yahoo has paid a ridiculous amount of money to exclusively stream one (1) NFL game this season featuring two (2) of the worst teams in the league live from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. The game will only be shown on CBS television in the local markets of each team. For those who receive CBS Buffalo on their cable system hoping to see this game, it will apparently be blacked out in Canada according to this tweet. If it is any consolation, there will be less commercials shown than a regular broadcast game.

  1. Steelers at Chiefs on RDS2 at 1pm

  2. I thought the blackout rules for this season were lifted?

    • Yes. They have been lifted. However, this particular game is only airing in the home markets where the two teams are involved. Secondary markets of the Bills & Jaguars will not be allowed to air the game.

  3. So far, I am getting that game on Cogeco in Niagara, which carries WIVB, the CBS Buffalo station. Either that report was false, or the operators at Cogeco are sleeping at the switch, they might still cut the cord. Stay tuned.

  4. I just hope no one at the NFL or the CRTC is reading any of these comments, I might get a knock at the door and arresting me for illegally watching a football game. I’ve heard stories in the past of police raiding establishments for illegally showing a blacked out games.

    • I don’t think that you will have to worry Peter. Dan is watching the game as well. There are a couple of establishments in Rochester who are streaming the game online through their television sets. If those places don’t get into any trouble, you (and Dan) should be okay. I know what you mean though as the NFL had enforcement officers patrolling bars & restaurants looking for instances of broadcasting games that have been blacked out in local & secondary markets.

  5. Here is a tweet from John Kryk regarding the Bills-Jaguars game on WIVB here in Canada:

@CTV/TSN blame “miscommunication” for stating #Bills-#Jaguars feed on #WIVB Buffalo would be blacked out in Canada, when it wasn’t.

  6. Actually, Canadian cable systems are not allowed to blackout particular programs on US ‘over the air’ stations. If Rogers, Bell or Cogeco had in fact blacked out the Bills game, they would have been in violation of their CRTC license to carry WIVB. The only allowance is for ‘simultaneous signal substitution’ (e.g. simsub) when a Canadian OTA station is showing the exact same program.

Let me ask you – have you EVER seen a Canadian cable company blackout a US OTA station? I never have.

So, the NFL can and did prohibit CTV from carrying the Bills game, but they can’t prohibit a Canadian cable company from showing the local Buffalo signal.

  7. I have seen an NHL game in 2009 between the Rangers & Canadiens at the Bell Centre (which was also airing on NBC as well as the CBC that day) being partially blacked out on Rogers in Ottawa. My guess is that the signal (WDIV) had either cut out at the station level or it was restored after an error at the local Rogers headend. One of the two.
