NFL Canadian TV Guide: Week 5

UPDATE: Sportsnet One online schedule is now showing that they are broadcasting the Chargers / Raiders game Sunday night.

The most interesting thing in week five of the NFL (as far as people who read this site are concerned), is who will be showing the rescheduled Chargers at Raiders game late on Sunday night.

Having had to move the game time from a 4pm ET kickoff to an 11:30pm ET one due to the Oakland Athletics playing playoff baseball on Saturday night in the same venue, the originally scheduled CBS game will be screening on the NFL Network in the US. The question though, for us in Canada, is whether it stays on the NFL Network here or whether TSN or Sportsnet will pick up the game.

The game, at its original time of 4pm ET, was never scheduled to be shown on any Canadian network, so neither TSN/CTV nor Sportsnet/City are losing a game by having it moved. The first question is whether Sportsnet has rights to NFL Network games or just the Thursday night game. That said, if Sportsnet were to pick up the game, it won’t be on their regional channels as they will be showing the two MLB NLDS games that night. SN 360 has nothing exciting showing, while SN1 is showing an Indycar replay.  If TSN got the game, it would flow-on nicely after their weekly Sunday night game on TSN. With TSN2 showing filler programming, it could be used either for overlap or the whole game.

But for now, with nothing announced, we can only presume Canadians will be able to see the game on the NFL Network. I will update this post should anything change.

  1. Hopefully Sportsnet 360 or TSN will air the game. It would be really cool if we can see the game here in Canada. If neither Sportsnet or TSN picks up the game and the NFL Network signal here in Canada gets blacked out, that is just wrong.

    • cool for who? target audience is insomianics out east and masochists out west

      • I just might be crazy enough to watch the entire game if it’s a close one. A can or two of Coca Cola should be enough to keep me awake. :)

  2. It was scheduled for 4 pm ET, not 1pm ET. They should have just moved it to Sunday evening even though NBC has exclusivity. No one will watch outside San Diego and Oakland.

    • Thanks for the correction.

Do you think anyone outside San Diego and Oakland would’ve been watching anyway, no matter what time of day/night it was on? CBS are probably happy they don’t have to show it and can go national with Broncos/Cowboys.

      • True that. The real winners are in the Bay Area and Southern California (including L.A.) who will now get Broncos-Cowboys AND the later Chargers-Raiders game.

  3. Saints-Bears (1pm Sunday) and Broncos-Cowboys (4:25pm Sunday) will be on RDS2

  4. It’s not looking good for the Chargers-Raiders game : on the Bell Fibe guide, it’s showing a blackout sunday night from 11:30pm on NFL Network.

    • If the NFL Network signal is blacked out and Sportsnet or TSN doesn’t show the game, it is time for a major overhaul of the Federal Broadcasting Act. Buying the rights to show a package of sporting events and refusing to air them is not cool and it DOESN’T make any sense either. Case in point: Sportsnet buying the rights to show the Fox package of college football games and airing a total of ZERO games from Fox Sports 1. Putting Blue Jays games on SN1 & SN360 at the same time for three weeks in a row on Thursday nights. Or earlier this week (up until yesterday) their broadcast schedule said that they were showing the game between Texas & Iowa State. Which then got magically removed and replaced by the Dodgers @ Braves game… which was already airing on SN1.

      • ya, i’m a raiders fan (i know, it’s painful) and i always look forward to the raidersvschargers game. if its only on nfl network it will be blacked out and some filler programming will be on, which means i am severely pissed! i’m keeping my fingers crossed that sportsnet will air it because they do Thursday night football which is also broadcast on nfl network in the states.

      • Part of the reason Sportsnet buys rights to certain sports packages is so that TSN doesn’t buy them. I’m pretty sure of that. Otherwise it makes no sense to purchase the Fox college football package and use very little of it. Oh wait, they do. They air the FOX Saturday night game…which FOX already shows. Brilliant! So they throw money at this and don’t use it. The reality is, TSN doesn’t want that many college football games so Rogers going out of their way to buy the rights and then go on about their “robust college football coverage” (said a month or so ago) seems ridiculous at best and financially irresponsible at worst.

  5. Too bad that one of the teams involved isn’t from Seattle, Detroit, or Boston where the game would air on Canadian TV via the CBS affiliates. I would trade Canadians to get the Raiders-Chargers game in exchange for “Americans” getting Hamilton-Toronto tonight on TV.

  6. Any other info about availability of the Giants/Eagles game at 1 p.m.? You say FOX Buffalo will be carrying it, but their website and my Rogers box says they’ll have Seattle/Indy instead.

  7. According to Sportsnet’s website, they are going to show Oakland/SD on both Sportsnet One and 360. Perhaps they’re listing it on both since they’re going to show it on one and they haven’t decided.

    • It could be a “bug” on Sportsnet’s website with their programming schedule. They list Drafted on both channels followed by the Chargers @ Raiders game. Once and for all, we finally know for sure that SN1 and/or SN360 will be showing the game.

  8. SN West and One will have the Chargers @ Raiders game, just showed that on the SN ticker.
