Weightlifting is a sport that is generally ignored by Canadian networks during the Olympics. Coverage on CBC at past Games was sparse at best. While CTV isn’t airing a lot of weightlifting in London, fans of the sport are likely to be pleasantly surprised by the amount of coverage it will get. CTV will air around 2 hours of coverage, while TSN will carry an additional 8 hours.
Canada’s chances of a medal in this sport are very slim. The best known Canadian weightlifter is Christine Girard, who won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (most of the elite weightlifters come from non-Commonwealth countries). She also won gold at the 2011 Pan American Games and finished just off the podium, in 4th, at the 2008 Games in Beijing. She will compete in the 63kg event.
