Canadian Sports Ratings Update: June 12, 2012

I’ve been quite busy. As a result, I’m way backlogged on posting any ratings. I have complete ratings (courtesy of TV Feeds My Family) from May 14-20 and May 28-June 3. I also have Euro 2012 and Stanley Cup Final ratings for last weekend, courtesy of TSN and CBC respectively. Everything in between is just what I’m able to piece together from other sources.

  1. From BBM. RDS averaged 420,000 viewers for games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Final on 5/30 and 6/2.

    • This also from BBM, the CBC averaged 778,000 for the Scotiabank pregame show for the first two games.

      • Another BBM update For game 5 last Saturday, the Scotiabank audience was 970,000.

Over on RDS, the third, fourth, and fifth games, averaged 529,000.

  2. So let me get this straight: there are mid-day soccer games on TSN, with better ratings than evening NHL Playoff games on CBC? Wow. Just wow.

  3. I still don’t understand why basketball gets so much more coverage in the media than soccer in Canada.

  4. You have a lot of vested local interests from the Raptors, MLSE & TSN. A lot of coverage is spillover coverage from the US as it is cheap filler alt-hockey programming for networks like Sportsnet & Score. NBA & March Madness is as much about stars & stories as it is about the actual match. So, a lot of fodder for sports radio type talk and slam dunk highlights while NBA attendance is weak.

What do you think?
