Sportsnet has the Canadian Soccer Championship over the next month. Play began earlier tonight, but I’ll post the press release anyway. The winner gets a spot in CONCACAF Champions League qualifying later in the summer.
Sportsnet, Canada’s home to all things soccer, presents comprehensive coverage of the 2012 Amway Canadian Championship as FC Edmonton, Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC battle it out for a chance to raise the Voyageurs Cupand represent Canada in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League. Coverage kicks off on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet East and Ontario featuring Montreal Impact hosting defending champion Toronto FC in the first game of a Canadian Championship doubleheader.
Rounding out Sportsnet’s twin bill on Wednesday is the Vancouver Whitecaps FC taking on FC Edmonton at 8 p.m. MT / 7 p.m. PT on Sportsnet West and Pacific. Sportsnet’s 30-minute preview show sets the stage for the first two matches in the semifinal legs of the Canadian Championship at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet East and Ontario. Host RJ Broadhead and Dick Howard will prime fans with pre-match analysis and check-in with both broadcast teams from Montreal (Gerry Dobson, Craig Forrest and Alyson Lozoff) and Edmonton (Craig MacEwen, Paul Dolan and Gene Principe).
Each team will play in two home-and-away semifinal stage matches (FC Edmonton vs. Whitecaps FC; Montreal Impact vs. Toronto FC), with the winners meeting in a home-and-away championship final round. The champion receives the 2012 Voyageurs Cup and a berth in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League; TFC is the defending Canadian Champion.
Next week Toronto hosts Montreal at 8pm ET on East/Ontario while Vancouver hosts Edmonton at 10pm ET on West/Pacific. The two-leg final goes on May 16 and 23.
