Friday Night Hockey Returns to the Q This Weekend

As the first round of the NHL playoffs comes to an end, the Quebec League semifinals are heating up. Rimouski leads Halifax 2-1 (game 4 is tonight). Meanwhile, defending Memorial Cup champions Saint John are up 2-1 on Chicoutimi.

With just three weeks remaining until the puck drops on the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament, Sportsnet’s Friday Night Hockey fuels fans with playoff action from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as the Rimouski Oceanic host the Halifax Mooseheads in Game 5 of the President’s Cup Semifinal Series at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet East, Ontario, West and Pacific.

HOCKEY CENTRAL host Daren Millard and analyst Damien Cox set the stage for the showdown from the Sportsnet studio, while play-by-play announcer RJ Broadhead, analyst Sam Cosentino and host Rob Faulds bring viewers all of the live playoff action from the Colisée de Rimouski.

Friday Night Hockey provides CHL playoff game coverage Friday nights throughout the post-season, culminating with wall-to-wall coverage of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup beginning Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. ET through to the Championship Final on Sunday, May 27 at 7 p.m. ET. (Full MasterCard Memorial Cup broadcast schedule to be released at a later date).

Also of note, the 2nd round of the NHL playoffs begins Friday night when the Predators visit the Coyotes. Puck drop is 9pm ET. This series will likely be on TSN in Canada. The rest of the 2nd round schedule will be released late Thursday night.

  1. Does each network have to take a series from each conference? The reason I ask is IF Ottawa wins tomorrow night, one would think that the number 1 play by play team for CBC would cover it (Hughson,Simpson and maybe Healy). So would that mean Bob Cole would be sent out to the west to do a series? I don’t remember the last time he did a series out west other than Detroit. He doesn’t travel too far now, other than maybe Winnipeg, but he never travels to the west coast anymore.

    • Very good question. The honest answer is I don’t know. In 2008 CBC had both east series, but that was under the old contract.

Cole did do a game in LA in December, but I doubt he’d travel between St. Louis and LA.

      • Also, in 2010, CBC decided to use the play-by-play team of Bob Cole, Garry Galley and Glean Healy to cover the Eastern Conference Final between the Habs and the Flyers. This decision actually made fans upset, they wanted to hear Hughson and Simpson call the game.

    • I don’t think they do. I believe CBC gets the first two picks regardless. Although they have traded off some games with TSN featuring American teams, if I recall in both 2009 and 2011. Depending on second round scheduling/logistics, I could see them taking both eastern conf series in the second round, especially if Ottawa advances. Hughson/Simpson/Healy could do Ottawa in the second round with Cole/Galley doing the other eastern series. But that’s still speculation at this point.

  2. St-John / Chicoutimi is on VOX tonight; Halifax / Rimouski is on TVA Sports tomorrow.

What do you think?
