Magic Johnson is probably my favourite basketball player of all time. This new ESPN documentary (from the 30 for 30 team) looks like it is certainly worth watching.
Twenty years ago, in an announcement that shocked the world, perennial NBA All-Star and three-time MVP Magic Johnson announced he was HIV-positive. ESPN Films looks back at the moment that stunned and saddened the sporting world with THE ANNOUNCEMENT, airing Saturday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m. ET on TSN2.
Directed by Nelson George, and narrated by Earvin “Magic” Johnson himself, THE ANNOUNCEMENT provides a first hand perspective as the hall of famer tells the captivating story in his own words.
The documentary also contains riveting insights from the people closest to him including his wife Cookie, son Andre, longtime rival and friend Larry Bird, Los Angeles Lakers teammates James Worthy and Kurt Rambis, former Lakers general manager Jerry West, and longtime friend and agent Lon Rosen. NBA Commissioner David Stern, former NBA star Karl Malone, and close friends Chris Rock and Arsenio Hall also share their memories of that time and insights on the character of the man who put a new face on HIV and AIDS.
Encore presentations of THE ANNOUNCEMENT will air Tuesday, March 27 at 4:30 p.m. ET on TSN2 and Sunday, April 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET on TSN.
