TSN Announces 2012 Skins Game Participants

And finally one that I’m only posting because I love curling and this is a sign the season is just around the corner, TSN has announced who will compete in the 2011 Casino Rama Skins Game. It features four world champions. The field is all-male again this year, which I think is right. While I have no problem with women’s teams competing, and the best are competitive, there are simply too many good men’s teams to exclude one of the best. In fact, I’d like to see the men’s field extend to 8 teams and a new 4-team women’s event created. But anyhow, here’s the press release from TSN.

TSN confirmed today that four Canadian world champions will play in the TSN CURLING SKINS GAME taking place Jan. 7 and 8, 2012 at Casino Rama in Rama, ON.

One of the highlights of the curling season, next year’s TSN Curling Skins Game will feature current world champion Jeff Stoughton, along with Kevin Martin, Kevin Koe and Glenn Howard. They were skips of the last four Canadian teams to win world championships.

The four champions will compete for $75,000 in prize money.

Alberta’s top curlers, Martin and Koe face off in opening draw on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. ET on TSN. Koe won the world championship in 2010. Martin, one of Canada’s most accomplished curlers, won the world championship in 2008 along with winning the Olympic Gold Medal in 2010. Considered one of the world’s best skins players, Martin is the defending TSN CURLING SKINS GAME champion and has earned a total of $412,150 playing in TSN skins games – an all time record.

In a rematch of this year’s TIM HORTONS BRIER final, Manitoba’s Stoughton will take on Ontario’s Howard in the primetime draw on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET. 2011 world champion Stoughton also won the world championship in 1996 while Howard won the 2007 world championship.

The final game will be played on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. ET on TSN.

Operated by TSN Events, this marks the fifth year in a row that Casino Rama will host the TSN Curling Skins Game.

And I have a quote from Randy Paul, Managing Director TSN Events:

This is an all star line up featuring the best of the best from Canadian curling. Together these teams represent dozens of national and international championships. The excitement and drama of the TSN Curling Skins Game and the atmosphere at Casino Rama makes this one of the highlights of the season for players and fans
