What started out as a season that was supposed to be special, according to most experts, has ended very unceremoniously for the Montreal Canadiens. Their 100th Anniversary season ended with an 8th straight loss. The team heads into the offseason with some big questions being asked. The biggest are who will own the team, who will be the GM and who will be the coach next season?
Besides that there are some serious on-ice issues. They have many players who will be unrestricted free agents this offseason. They include Saku Koivu, Mike Komisarek, Alex Kovalev and Alex Tanguay. They have to ask, who will they keep? Kovalev is a very streaky player, he had a great year last season and a horrible year this year. Tanguay missed most of the season with an injury. Komisarek is one of the best defensemen in the NHL. And Koivu is probably their most valuable player. Bob Gainey, or whoever his sucessor may be, will have some very tough choices in the coming months.
Meanwhile goaltending is a huge issue. Do they trade one of their current goalies for something, then sign a new one. Or do they just hope Price had a bit of an off season, and will come back strong next year. I think the latter is the correct choice, but we will just have to wait and see.
