2014 NHL Divisional Semifinals Schedule and Announcers

with 17 comments

The new NHL playoff format debuts Wednesday night with the start of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The new divisional-based format has resulted in one laughable “rivalry” (Montreal-Tampa Bay), but otherwise the first round features quite a few true rivalry matchups. In the East the Detroit Red Wings will play the Boston Bruins in the playoffs for the first time since the Original Six era; they last met in 1957. Meanwhile the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers re-new their longtime playoff rivalry. The Western Conference features three great rivalry series. The Colorado Avalanche face the Minnesota Wild. These two have played in the same division since the Wild joined the NHL in 2000. The St. Louis Blues encounter the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks. In the Pacific Division, California rivals San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings face off.

  2. Too bad the Canadiens/Lightning and Red Wings/Bruins series have some common days, forcing the CBC to pass on the latter series. Getting the Wings/B’s series doesn’t quite soften the blow of the Habs being the only playoff squad north of the 49th parallel in BCE’s case, but it’s the best the company could’ve hoped for WRT programming TSN.

  3. ”The Colorado Avalanche face the Minnesota Wild. These two have played in the same division since the Wild joined the NHL in 2002.”

The Wild played their first NHL season in 2000-2001, just as a correction.

  4. CHEX is doing Game 3 of the Chicago/St. Louis series, not Game 1.

  5. Another correction to make, game three of the Blues-Blackhawks series will be on CHEX, not game one.

  6. Do you know what the commentators will be for each series? Also which games will TSN will be using the nbc crews?

    • For CBC it is:

      MTL-TB: Hughson, Simpson, Healy, Amber
      CLB-PIT: Cole, Galley, Campbell
      CHI-STL: Brown, Millen
      LA-SJ: Lee, Hrudey, Oake

Not sure about TSN, but I’m looking into to it today and I’ll post later.

      • I guess this will be Bob Cole’s last playoffs? I assume Sportsnet will not bring him over.

        • I don’t know for sure. Might depend on how many series Rogers does their own coverage of next year. They could need up to 8 crews if they produce every game themselves.

But this could be the last time we hear Cole or even Brown on TV for a while. TSN will be using their guys on Senators broadcasts, so unless Sportsnet brings Brown in, he will only have Ottawa radio to do.

          • Hi Josh,

I know that we have discussed this during the winter months but if Dean Brown is not hired by Sportsnet, it is still my guess that Dean Brown will do some (if not all) Senators games on TSN as there will be lots of public pressure & popular demand.

            • Dean has as much as admitted that he won’t call Senators games on TSN because they already have Cuthbert, Miller, Randorf and Black locked up in contracts, so they have no need for him. It makes no financial sense, especially when its probably in Miller and Cuthbert’s contracts that they will get a certain number of NHL games per season.

              • Not to get too off topic but do you think TSN will renew their regional deal with the Canadiens, especially with Bell having something like an 18% ownership in the team? Also, will TSN have their own announcers for the regional Leafs games as well or will they use the Bowen/Millen crew as has been standard in the past for regional Leaf games regardless of network?

                17 April, 2014 at 1:37am

                • I think they will. Especially since RDS still has the non-Saturday Habs games so they can share some production.

TSN will certainly use Cuthbert or Miller and Ferraro on Leafs games next season. Cuthbert and Miller are both getting as many or more NHL games than they worked this season.

  7. Game 3 of the NY/Philly series will be on TSN2.

    • And CBC got 2,256,000 for game 1. Combined RDS/CBC audience for game 1 in Canada was 3,592,000.

  8. Looks like TSN could use a 3rd channel tonight. 2 hockey games and the Raptors all playing. Bruins and Red Wings then Rangers and Flyers on TSN 2?
