The one thing to note is Sunday’s ratings. Lots of things on and competing for eyeballs. None of them really did anything spectacular. The Brier was down under a million for the first time in a while, and it only got about a quarter of its viewers from the lucrative 25-54 age group. Hockey on RDS was relatively consistent, finishing second. One of the biggest games in Canadian baseball history only drew 70, 000 more viewers than a Jays spring training game a few weeks ago.

  1. I would not put too much stock into the WBC Tv ratings I do not think that it is just as big of an event in the North America Canada or US as much as it is in the rest of the World.

  2. It’s bigger in Canada than in the US since at least it is on a major sports network while it is only on MLB network in the US. It would be even bigger if Canada actually made it to the 2nd round.

But until the US gives their full blessing, there are a segment of Cdn baseball fans who don’t care for the WBC or prefer the Jays win the World Series before Canada wins the WBC.

    • It’s not just the US that doesn’t care. They are a lot of good players (pitchers especially) who aren’t playing. Darvish, Bautista and Jurrjens come to mind among the teams that made final 4. Dempster and Martin always find an excuse to not play for Canada. I know injuries play a role, but its hard to take the tournament too seriously when some of the best don’t play.

      • Bautista stated that he wanted badly to play, but the Jays wouldn’t let him because he was recovering from injury. Also, I’m pretty sure this was the first time Martin chose not to play for Canada since he’s been asked … so not really a case where he ‘always finds an excuse’.

I dunno. There are definitely some players who haven’t taken an interest, but there looked to be plenty of passion/caring on the players on the Dominican and Puerto Rican teams tonight.

    • Ratings say it’s actually bigger in the US than in Canada. Canada games listed above did ~300k and ~500k, US vs. Dominican Republic did 883,000, and that doesn’t even include spanish viewers on ESPN Deportes.

      • eh em, US has bigger pop, if Canada did 500k, US should be doing 5 million.

  3. Maybe this is a stupid question but can someone tell me why the CBC’s Sat Night Games are always about double of what TSN’s games are with the ratings? I mean it can’t just be that HNIC is on OTA can it?

    • Probably has a lot to do with Saturday just being a traditional night to watch hockey. There isn’t really much competition on the other networks. Even on Wednesday (when TSN doesn’t have to compete with other NHL games on Sportsnet) they have to go head-to-head with highly watched shows like Survivor.

  4. When you compare the Penguins @ Leafs rating this week to last week’s Penguins @ Canadiens rating including RDS, more viewers watched the Habs. The Canadiens @ Lightning game is part of the 2.021 million on HNIC.
