Canadian Sports Ratings Update: June 12, 2012
I’ve been quite busy. As a result, I’m way backlogged on posting any ratings. I have complete ratings (courtesy of TV Feeds My Family) from May 14-20 and May 28-June 3. I also have Euro 2012 and Stanley Cup Final ratings for last weekend, courtesy of TSN and CBC respectively. Everything in between is just what I’m able to piece together from other sources.

So let me get this straight: there are mid-day soccer games on TSN, with better ratings than evening NHL Playoff games on CBC? Wow. Just wow.

The CBC games with the low ratings were the weekend afternoon games

Yes, but still damn impressive. For soccer to beat hockey in the afternoon (albeit different weekends) is impressive. Imagine if Canada was to make the 2014 World Cup with potential late afternoon/primetime games.

I still don’t understand why basketball gets so much more coverage in the media than soccer in Canada.

I’ve wondered the same thing. It’s quite obvious soccer gets at least equal ratings (EPL compared to NBA). Probably better many weeks.

You have a lot of vested local interests from the Raptors, MLSE & TSN. A lot of coverage is spillover coverage from the US as it is cheap filler alt-hockey programming for networks like Sportsnet & Score. NBA & March Madness is as much about stars & stories as it is about the actual match. So, a lot of fodder for sports radio type talk and slam dunk highlights while NBA attendance is weak.
